Happiness is in Your Hands: 5 Keys To Living a Happier Life

27. May 2015

They say that college is the best time of your life, and I’m almost done with it. I’ve been going to school for nearly every year that I’ve been alive, so it’s strange to think that I won’t have a syllabus given to me at the beginnings of fall and spring. Never again will my schedule be so planned out. The real world has no core curriculum. It’s what you make of it. I guess from now on, everything is an elective.

What do I do now?

Growing up, my father always encouraged me to pursue what made me happy. He himself exudes happiness, and I rarely see him not sporting his characteristic grin. He grew up in a small and rural town in Japan, and he moved out to California to marry my mother. Despite barely speaking English and having no plans as to what he was going to do in California, he always remained optimistic and positive.

I’m about to head out into the real world and am honestly quite nervous about what lies ahead. I decided to sit down with my dad and ask him about his advice as how to live a life full of happiness.

I’ve learned that happiness is the product of your thoughts and actions. Here are five tips to be happy more often:

Smile more often

Enhance your life by enhancing the lives of others. Smiling is contagious. Smiling is comforting and inviting. It’s an experience that you can share. Dale Carnegie once wrote: “A smile costs nothing, but creates much. It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.” Practice smiling in your daily interactions, and the results will immediately show. This is a great tip, because it not only makes you happy, but it also makes those around you happy too.

Always look at what you have done and not at what you haven’t

Often, people will finish their day brooding about what they have yet to do, but it’s important to remind yourself that there is always tomorrow. More than likely, you’ve accomplished a lot, and it’s important to congratulate yourself. Finish off every day with positive thoughts.

Spend a few minutes each day thinking about the things that make you happy

These few minutes will give you time to focus on what makes you By paying attention to the positive things in your life, you will become happier and more grateful. Happiness is hard to define, but many people know if they have it or not. It’s necessary to be aware of the happiness in your life. You deserve it.

Associate with happy people

Remember, happiness is contagious. It’s easier to be happy when those around you are too.

Make the most of every day

Time is relative. The older you get, the quicker time seems to go by. Appreciate every day. Stop and smell the roses. Don’t sweat the small stuff. I could keep listing clichés, but you get the point. In life, everything is ultimately up to you. Choose to be happy.
